8. Final design recommendations
Analysing user test #2 is quick and painless - if the
results indicate that we are on the right track. But this
is also the moment at which certain key decisions have
to be made. For example, the majority of users may prefer
a particular technological solution. But there may be
a sizable minority who dislike this solution intensely.
Do we go back to step 6 and attempt to find a solution
that appeals to both groups? Or do we develop the tool
preferred by the majority? And if we go for the latter
option, do we also develop a tool for the minority?
In most cases, we find we're on the right track. And
that's when we decide on the final design criteria,
based on the prototype that turned out to be most popular
during user test #2.
We decide on precise radii for all the curves and contours
on the tool. We determine the design of corners and
edges. We finalize the different positions the tool
can take. Materials, colours and graphics are specified
in detail.
Finally, we manufacture a tool that is identical in
every way to the tool that will eventually be sold to
professional users worldwide. A true-to-life prototype.
